A global shipping company which is launching a brand-new service between Malta and Sicily are looking for an Assistant Engineer to join their new venture in Malta. You will be sailing aboard a state-of-the-art, high-speed catamaran between the two islands and will report to the Chief Engineer you will be responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the vessel’s engineering plant as well as supervision of engineering department members. The ideal candidate will hold a First or Second Assistant Engineer Unlimited Horsepower license and have STCW 95 certification, ideally having previously sailed on a high-speed vessel. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintenance and operation of vessel systems within legal requirements of Transport Malta, and other pertinent regulatory agencies
  • Participate in the safe operation of vessel as required within TM regulations
  • Conduct drills with marine and non-marine crew as directed by the master or with engineering crew
  • Report any problems to the chief engineer immediately
  • Maintain a safe and clean engine room and mechanical spaces
  • Assist shore technicians as needed
  • Maintain daily logs
  • Properly stock and inventory vessel’s spare parts
  • Operate vessel appropriate to the parameters of the IMO-HSC
  • Properly process and pump sewage and oily water tanks when needed
  • Participate in the interviewing and selection process of motorman position; make hiring and selection recommendations
  • Assign work to engine room personnel based on their knowledge, skills and competing demands
  • Direct engine room personnel in the course of their work
  • Adjust complaints and first level grievances of engine room personnel
  • Ensure performance and behaviour of engineers meets legal and professional requirements and recommend discipline and/or discharge as warranted
  • Train new engineers as required
  • Participate in the evaluation process of Motormen.
  • Make emergency repairs when needed
  • Perform daily/weekly/monthly preventative maintenance as per maintenance schedule
  • Perform all other duties and responsibilities normally expected of a vessel’s first assistant engineer
  • Present a neat and alert personal appearance
CANDIDATE PROFILE
  • 5 Years’ experience as Marine Engineer demonstrating ability to handle increasing levels of responsibility
  • Computer literate
  • Specific training and experience in management of major on-board systems by type and brand
  • Ability to use independent judgment and discretion to develop and execute innovative solutions to engineering problems
  • Strong electronics background
  • Excellent career record in the marine industry
  • Possess and demonstrate superior mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, electronic and other skills exercised in engineering management of a large motor vessel
  • Demonstrate appropriate management and administrative skills
  • Utilize proven training and mentoring techniques
  • Possess a thorough understanding of all-pertinent regulations and laws
  • Communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
  • Logically and independently plan, organize, and complete work assignments
  • Demonstrate well-developed inter-personal skills
  • Set and achieve high standards of performance
  • Demonstrate initiative and be able to make progress on multiple assignments under time constraints
  • Possess excellent analytical, problem-solving, critical thinking and decision-making skills
  • Understudy the chief engineer and be able to act in his absence
  • First or Second Assistant Engineer Unlimited Horsepower license
  • STCW 95 certificate
  • High-speed passenger vessel experience preferred
  • Water-jet experience preferred
  • Successful completion of in-house IMO-HSC Type Rating program
