Our client, a reputable and close-knit insurance provider based in Malta, is seeking a dedicated Underwriting Manager specializing in Motor insurance. The Motor Underwriting Manager is responsible for leading the Motor Underwriting team and overseeing the Motor portfolio to support profitable and sustainable growth. The role provides technical underwriting guidance and referral support, manages key stakeholder and broker relationships, and contributes to the achievement of business objectives through effective portfolio oversight, team leadership and continuous improvement.
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Oversee and support the day-to-day operations of the Motor Underwriting function, providing technical guidance and acting as the main referral point for complex or nonstandard underwriting risks whilst ensuring adherence to underwriting guidelines, authority limits, pricing strategy and risk appetite.
  • Monitor the overall performance, profitability and sustainability of the Motor portfolio through regular portfolio reviews, analysis and reporting, taking corrective action where necessary to support business objectives and underwriting discipline.
  • Work closely with the business development function, intermediaries and key business partners to support sustainable growth, retention and the continued strengthening of commercial relationships and market presence.
  • Support the Head of Business Relations and General Manager in the management and development of relationships with key intermediaries, strategic partners and large accounts, including assisting with complex Motor and fleet business where required.
  • Collaborate with the Product & Technical Underwriting Lead in the ongoing review and enhancement of Motor products, underwriting guidelines, policy wordings and underwriting initiatives aimed at improving competitiveness and portfolio performance.
  • Prepare underwriting, portfolio and performance reports for senior management and actively contribute to Underwriting and Claims Committee meetings through the presentation of relevant analysis, trends, concerns and proposed actions.
  • Work closely with the Motor Claims Department to strengthen collaboration between Underwriting and Claims, improve operational interaction and identify claims trends, leakage issues and underwriting actions required to improve portfolio performance and customer outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the Data Solutions and IT teams to support the development and enhancement of underwriting systems, tools, reporting capabilities, automation initiatives and operational processes aimed at improving efficiency and service delivery.
  • Identify and support opportunities for continuous improvement across workflows, controls, systems, procedures and operational processes within the Motor Underwriting function.
  • Ensure compliance with internal policies, governance standards, regulatory requirements and delegated underwriting authorities.
  • Lead, support and develop members of the Motor Underwriting team through regular communication, coaching, one-to-one meetings, performance management and effective workload allocation, whilst fostering a positive and collaborative team environment.
  • Keep abreast of market developments, competitor activity, regulatory changes and emerging trends affecting the Motor insurance sector.
  • Support strategic projects and other business initiatives as may be required by Senior Management.
  • Achievement of Motor portfolio profitability, growth and retention targets.
  • Effective management and oversight of underwriting quality and technical standards within the Motor Underwriting team.
  • Support the delivery of sustainable and profitable business growth in line with company strategy and risk appetite.
  • Development and maintenance of strong intermediary, broker and partner relationships.
  • Timely preparation and presentation of accurate underwriting and portfolio management information.
  • Continuous improvement of underwriting processes, service standards and operational efficiency.
  • Maintenance of effective collaboration and communication between the Motor Underwriting, Motor Claims and Data Solutions teams to support operational efficiency and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Active contribution towards the enhancement and development of underwriting systems, reporting tools, operational processes and data-driven decision-making capabilities.
  • Effective people management, staff engagement and development within the Motor Underwriting team.
  • Ensuring appropriate performance management, coaching and succession planning practices are maintained across the department.
  • Ensuring compliance with underwriting governance, authority structures and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong technical understanding of Motor underwriting principles, portfolio management and risk assessment. 
  • Ability to lead, mentor and develop underwriting teams whilst maintaining high technical and service standards.
  • Strong commercial awareness with the ability to balance growth objectives with underwriting profitability.
  • Ability to build credibility and maintain effective relationships with brokers, intermediaries, business partners and internal stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and reporting capabilities, with the ability to identify trends and implement corrective actions.
  • Strong leadership and people management capabilities, including coaching, conflict resolution, staff development and team engagement.
  • Proactive approach towards continuous improvement, operational efficiency and process enhancement.  
  • Effective communication, negotiation and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to operate effectively under pressure whilst managing multiple priorities and stakeholders.
  • Commitment to maintaining professional knowledge, market awareness and continuous professional development (CPD).
CANDIDATE PROFILE
  • Minimum 15 years experience in Motor Insurance.
  • ACII qualification preferred, or actively working toward achieving it within an agreed timeframe.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Minimum 3 years experience in a team supervisory role, preferably within the Motor UW dept.
  • Fluent in Maltese and English language.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
  • €48,000 - €50,000 Gross Per Annum
  • Salary will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and skills. The advertised salary range is indicative, any offer will reflect the successful candidate’s suitability.
