A global shipping company which is launching a brand-new service between Malta and Sicily are looking for a Deck Officer (OOW) to join their new venture in Malta. You will be sailing aboard a state-of-the-art, high-speed catamaran between the two islands and will report to the Chief Mate. You will assist the master with the management and safe operation of the vessel and ensure that guests and team members safety is always safeguarded. The ideal candidate will hold a STCW OOW license (Officer of the Watch) license and have STCW 95 certification, ideally having previously sailed on a high-speed vessel. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist Master in navigation and control of vessel; with primary duties of cargo, vessel security and first responder for medical emergencies.
  • Supervise embarkation and disembarkation of passengers and vehicles
  • Manage and operate vessel within legal requirements of TM, IMO-HSC and other pertinent regulatory agencies
  • Compile, review and maintain official vessel logs and other necessary reports and forms
  • Monitor safety issues on vessel and correct problems under the direction of the master; recommend corrective action concerning non-compliant employees.
  • Assist master in role as onboard risk manager
  • Assist master in establishment of a safety “culture” and take corrective action as situations may require
  • Participate in the interviewing and selection of AB’s, and make recommendations as to hiring
  • Take a lead role in training of crewmembers
  • Assign work to unlicensed deck personnel based on their knowledge, skills and competing demands
  • Direct unlicensed deck personnel in the course of their work
  • Share responsibility and authority with Chief Mate to adjust complaints and first level grievances of unlicensed deck personnel
  • Organize and participate in drills with crewmembers as directed by the master
  • Assure proper recordation of all drill activities
  • Ensure performance and behaviour of deck department team members meets legal and professional requirements and recommend disciplinary action or discharge as required.
  • Participate in marine department meetings as required by master or director of marine operations
  • Participate in the evaluation of AB’s performance
  • Follow the onboard chain of command structure and duties assigned under the Watch Quarter Station Bill
CANDIDATE PROFILE
  • 5 Years’ experience as licensed Mate demonstrating the ability to handle increasing levels of responsibility or an equivalent degree from a Maritime Academy in combination with command experience
  • Computer literacy in conjunction with administrative skills
  • Training and experience in the operation of onboard control, communication, lifesaving, navigation and fire-fighting systems
  • Ability to use independent judgment and discretion to develop and execute innovative solutions to operational problems
  • Excellent career record in the marine industry
  • Possess and demonstrate superior judgment, analytical ability, performance under pressure and other skills necessary during routine operation or emergency response aboard a high-capacity motor vessel
  • Be able to design and implement training, mentoring, coaching and counselling programs and sessions
  • Thoroughly understand all pertinent regulations and laws under which the vessel operates
  • Communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
  • Logically and independently plan, organize, and complete work assignments
  • STCW OOW license (Officer of the Watch)
  • High-speed passenger vessel experience preferred not a necessity.
  • Water-jet experience preferred not a necessity.
  • Radar endorsement with ARPA
  • GMDSS certificate
  • STCW 95 certificate with passenger ship endorsement preferred
  • Vessel Security Training (SSO)
  • Successful completion of in-house IMO-HSC Type Rating program
