On behalf of our client, a financial services company based in Malta, is seeking an MLRO (Money Laundering Reporting Officer) to join their team. MLRO will serve as the primary compliance authority for anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorist financing (CTF) within our Maltese payment institution to ensure compliance with PMLFTR regulations, liaise with regulatory bodies, and uphold our robust AML framework.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBITLIES
- Implement, monitor, and enhance the institution’s AML/CTF policies, procedures, and controls, aligned with MFSA, FIAU, EU AML Directives, PSD2, and GDPR
- Conduct periodic business-wide AML risk assessments, including payment-specific typologies, geographies, and high-risk customer segments
- Maintain KYC/CDD/EDD processes for customers, ensuring ongoing risk-based due diligence and enhanced procedures where needed
- Design or refine transaction monitoring systems to detect suspicious patterns investigate alerts and prepare and submit STRs/SARs to the FIAU
- Supervise sanctions screening and maintenance of false positive filters for payments.
- Be the designated liaison with MFSA and FIAU for regulatory interactions, audits, inspection, and reporting
- Prepare and deliver regular AML/CTF reports to the Board and Group Head of AML and Compliance
- Maintain effective AML/CFT governance: conflict-of-interest frameworks, record-keeping, complaint handling, ICT resilience, and staff training
- Oversee internal and external AML audits, recommending improvements and remediating control weaknesses promptly
CANDIDATE PROFILE
- MFSA-approved MLRO or equivalent experience in a Maltese or EU financial institution
- Minimum 3 years in AML/CFT compliance within payments, fintech, PSPs, or banking
- Deep knowledge of PMLFTR, MFSA and FIAU procedures, EU AMLD, PSD2, sanctions regimes, and goAML reporting
- Professional qualifications (e.g., CAMS, ICA Diploma) strongly preferred
- Academic background in Law, Finance, Economics, or equivalent
- Fluent in English; proficiency in Maltese is a plus
