On behalf of our client, an Insurance Company, GRS Recruitment are seeking a Motor Claims Manager in Malta. The Motor Claims Manager is responsible for leading the Motor Claims function through expert technical oversight, strong people management, and high-quality decision-making. The role requires advanced competency in motor liability, bodily injury (BI) assessment, operational control, and stakeholder management, driving performance through sound judgement, leadership, and continuous improvement.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead the handling of complex and high-value motor claims (including BI, liability disputes and catastrophic losses).
  • Apply BI jurisprudence and internal BI methodology accurately and consistently.
  • Review survey and repair assessments with expert-level understanding of vehicle damage, repair techniques, BER decisions and reserve adequacy.
  • Ensure technical decisions reduce leakage, support recoveries and protect the company’s financial position.
  • Provide escalated technical guidance to claims handlers and other departments.
  • Represent the company confidently in Maltese and English courts.
  • Manage legal correspondence, supports litigation strategy, and liaises closely with external lawyers.
  • Ensure all claims practices align with internal policies, system procedures, regulatory requirements and industry standards.
  • Coache the team on legal developments, BI case law, and liability principles.
  • Oversee system workflows, claims processes, payments accuracy and operational controls.
  • Perform file reviews to identify leakage, improve reserve accuracy, and drive quality outcomes.
  • Support digital and finance teams with system testing, data validation and payment governance.
  • Drive SLA compliance across surveys, repairs and vendor submissions.
  • Negotiate with repairers, surveyors and suppliers to optimise cost without compromising quality.
  • Implement technical controls (e.g., dismantling, temporary repairs) to reduce unnecessary delays and exposure.
  • Monitor and evaluate vendor performance using KPIs, SLAs and structured feedback loops.
  • Lead, develops and motivates the Motor Claims team to deliver technical excellence and service quality.
  • Conduct routine coaching, performance reviews, capability assessments and training sessions.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Support onboarding and technical upskilling for new hires.
  • Act as the main contact point between Claims, Underwriting, Finance, Digital and Customer Service.
  • Communicate complex technical decisions clearly and persuasively to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Represent the company within the Insurance Association of Malta and other industry platforms.
  • Build strong relationships with legal partners, surveyors, repair networks, and external agencies.           
CANDIDATE PROFILE
  • 7–10 years in senior motor claims roles, including team leadership and operational oversight.
  • Degree in Insurance, Banking & Finance, Risk Management, Business, or related field (MQF Level 6), plus a recognized insurance qualification (e.g., Cert CII).
  • Strong knowledge of motor liability principles, vehicle repair processes, BI calculations, VAT procedures, and Maltese/international insurance regulations.
  • Full fluency in Maltese and English, excellent communication and negotiation abilities, and proficiency in claims systems, estimating tools, MS Office, and analytics platforms (e.g., Power BI).
  • Proven experience in cost control, vendor management, and budget monitoring within the local insurance or automotive sector.
  • Analytical thinker with advanced problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communicator capable of explaining complex technical issues.
  • Commercially aware with a focus on cost control and process improvement.
  • Leadership-driven, with proven capability to coach and elevate team performance.
  • Integrity and professionalism, especially in legal, regulatory and ethical matters.
